Organization: The ArtsCenter <br />Project: Kids' Day <br />Sponsorship Request <br />2 <br />Oreanization Description: The ArtsCenter <br />The ArtsCenter creates an environment for exploring and appreciating artistic expression <br />SCOPE: The ArtsCenter (TAC), a private not-for profit organization, links art, artists and audiences in <br />Orange County through programs, events and classes designed in response to community needs and <br />interests. The co-existence of visual, performing and literary arts in one accessible facility encourages <br />multi-disciplinary collaborations and provides wide-ranging experiences for professionals, amateurs and <br />non-artists of all ages to learn about and participate in visual and performing arts. <br />GOALS: The goals of TAC are to facilitate arts appreciation in the community; to encourage diverse <br />artistic and cultural expression; to establish community partnerships; and to support new artists. To <br />accomplish these goals TAC staff works with community members and artists to present, produce and <br />teach all artistic disciplines. TAC works with area arts and community organizations to plan culturally <br />diverse programs that assist but do not duplicate other programming. North Carolina artists' participation <br />is promoted in all phases of programming. <br />SERVICES: TAC offers programming in five areas: <br />• ArtSchool classes in visual, literary and performing arts <br />• Children and Family Programs which include classes, summer camp and performing arts far <br />children, parents and school groups; and outreach within area schools. <br />• Concerts which feature world, traditional, papulaz and jazz music from local and nationally- <br />recognized groups; <br />• Theater which includes performances by professional touring companies, community theater, <br />traditional, non-traditional and improvisational groups; <br />• Visual Arts exhibiting 12 community-oriented shows each yeaz by local artists in The ArtsCenter <br />Gallery: <br />Scholarships and work/study positions are available for TAC classes. Within the 19,000 sq. $. facility all <br />performance areas, gallery space and 75 percent of the classroom space is accessible to the disabled. <br />TAC, in conjunction with three group homes and North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation, provides <br />socialization training and job skills training for re-entry into the workplace. TAC also works with laca.l <br />schools, fraternity and sorority community service programs to provide structured exposure to technical <br />theater and arts administration. In addition to providing space for the Carrboro Senior Center, TAC <br />receives thousands of hours of volunteer support from members of the Retired Seniors Volunteer program <br />and seniors at lazge. <br />STRUCTURE: TAC was incorporated in 1975. TAC's 13-member board includes five women, two <br />African-Americans and one Asian American. Nine staff members (7 full-time) operate TAC with the help <br />of over 200 volunteers who contribute more than 12,000 hours annually. TAC has almost 1,000 <br />contributing Friends and Subscribers. <br />ORANGE COUNTY CONNECTIONS: In the past year, TAC offered 393 art classes, serving 2,687 <br />area adults and youngsters. Orange County children have benefited from $1,800 in ArtSchool <br />scholazships. Fiscal year 1999-2000 saw 84 concerts featuring 45 groups with North Cazolina <br />connections, 44 of which had at least one Orange County tie. Over the year, 11 Jazz Jams featuring 15- <br />20 musicians per event were largely represented by Orange County players. Children and Family <br />Programs annually serves more than 10,000 children within Orange County's borders. <br />
