Box 8181
www.orangecountync.gov NORTH CAROLINA Hillsborough, NC 27278
MEMORANDUM
TO: Orange Unified Transportation Board
FROM: Nishith Trivedi, Orange County Transportation Planner
DATE: August 21, 2019
SUBJECT: Chapel Hill Transit North-South Bus Rapid Transit (CHT NS BRT)
Attachment: Locally Preferred Alternative
This memorandum is to provide the Orange Unified Transportation Board (OUTBoard) an
update on the CHT NS BRT Transit Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA).
July 12, 2019 Chapel Hill hosted a public meeting on the NS BRT LPA (Attachment 1). The
BRT will go along the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Columbus Street
corridor, from Southern Village park-and-ride lot to Eubanks Road park-and-ride lot. It is
currently completing its 30% design and full National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
documentation. Upon completion of NEPA, it will be submitted to Federal Transit
Administration (FTA) for Small Starts funding.
Next steps of the project are as follows:
• Fall 2019: Request FTA Small Starts Rating to determine eligibility for capital funding.
• 2019 — 2020: Prepare final plans, specifications, and bid packages for BRT
construction.
• 2020 — 2021: Chapel Hill Transit will work with the FTA to develop a Grant Agreement,
which is the means by which the FTA provides Small Starts capital funds. Signing the
Grant Agreement marks the end of Project Development.
• 2021 — 2022: Construction is anticipated to begin in early spring 2021 and last
approximately 18 months.
• 2022: Following construction, the NS BRT would open for revenue service in 2022.
For additional information: https://nsbrt.org
Transportation planning staff will continue to keep the OUTBoard apprised of this project.
Feel free to contact staff with any questions.
