Orange County Advisory Board on Aging <br /> <br />MINUTES <br />Tuesday, June 11, 2019 <br />Passmore Center <br /> <br />PRESENT: (Board Members) Mary Altpeter, Jenny Womack, Jeff Charles – Board candidate, Peg Cohn, Vibeke <br />Talley, Rachel Bearman, Colin Austin, Heather Altman. (Staff) Janice Tyler, Annie Deaver, Lisa Meinert, Shenae <br />McPherson. <br />Absent and excused: Michael Zuber, Dick White. Absent: James Harris <br /> <br />1. Introductions and Announcements <br />a. Jeff Charles announced that he is a member of the Town of Chapel Hill Senior Citizen & Handicap <br />Advisory Board. He will serve as our liaison to the Chapel Hill board <br />2. Approval of Minutes – May 14, 2019 <br />a. Approved <br />3. Any other Agenda items <br />a. None <br /> <br />Director’s Report <br />4. Staff updates <br />a. New Pastoral Counseling Intern – Jill Bergkamp, a Clinical Pastoral Education Program student from UNC <br />Healthcare. She will be with us 2.5 days a week focused on exploring social groups at both centers to <br />expand social connections with older adults. Office hours at Seymour: Monday & Friday; Passmore: <br />Thursday. Peg Cohn offered to provide space at Carol Woods and to introduce her to their chaplain <br />b. UNC School of Public Health Summer Practicum Student – Emily Morgan from the UNC School of Public <br />Health, MPH candidate. Emily will work on our two VC 55+ pilot projects: Patient Navigator/Health and <br />Mail Management. This is a 10 week summer practicum <br />c. UNC School of Social Work Intern – Eddie Alcorn – Summer placement, working on revitalize Music & <br />Memory and helping the Aging Transitions team analyze individual work flow and data. Position is full- <br />time through August 1. <br />d. Wellness Interns from NCCU – Undergrad’s Cierra Hoover and Lundan Winchester will be coming the <br />first week of July from Exercise Physiology and Recreation Therapy program <br />5. National Council on Aging Conference – The Seymour Center program, "Making Technology Easier for Seniors <br />Expo" won first place in the Technology category for the 2018 National Institute of Senior Centers Programs of <br />Excellence! Seymour Center’s Programs and Operations Manager, Cydnee Sims, will receive the award. <br />6. 2nd Annual Working and Volunteering after Retirement – Exploring Your Options Workshop: July 17, 8:30 am -1 <br />pm at Durham Tech – Orange County Campus mark your calendar to attend. <br />7. Voter ID Forums: Monday, July 15, Seymour Center; and Thursday, August 8, Passmore Center. Mark you <br />calendar to attend and share with others. The event will educate voters about the new Voter ID law, resources <br />and how to get involved. <br />8. Lee Pavao’s Memorial Service: July 28, Seymour Center – Janice prepared a resolution for the BOCC to be <br />presented to the family. Family are exploring the possibility with staff for a room at the Seymour Center be <br />named after him for his extensive work on behalf of older adults in Orange County and the Seymour Center. <br />BOCC will review this at a later date. The Friends of the Seymour Center are accepting any donations for Lee <br />and the family has set up website for donations. Donations to be presented to the Friends of Seymour Center <br /> <br />Continuing Business <br />9. Recognition and thanks to Chair Peggy Cohn who is as retiring from the Advisory Board on Aging after serving 15 <br />years <br />a. Incoming chair – Heather Altman <br />10. Election of vice chair <br />a. Colin Austin was elected by acclamation
