ORANGE COUNTY PLANNING 8~ INSPECTIONS DEPARTMENT
Craig N. Benedict, AICP, Director
L"an'P or e'
Erosion Control Division ~~` ~°p 306E Revere Road
(919) 245-258$ u ~ P O Box 8181
(919) 644-3002 (FAx) Hillsborough,
www.co.orange.nc.us '"~<<e ~.~~~~'~ North Carolina, 27278
'~~~ ~~
To: Craig Benedict, AICP, Planning Director
From: Ren Ivins, Erasion Control Supervisor
Date: February 22, 2001
Subject: Sunrise Springs Starmwater Requirements
I met with Mr. Dodson in the field in January of this year and suggested the following
measures to what I believe is his satisfaction. The Proposed Sunrise Springs site was
inves#igated and is still in compliance.
This memorandum is intended to clarify the duties and responsibilities of the Developer in
providing both peak flow reduction and velocity reduction in and to an existing wet weather
drainage.
The Developer will install a "level spreader' on the proposed Sunrise Springs side of
Sunrise Road. This is a low profile, unobtrusive minimum disturbance designed to redirect
storm water out into the woods as sheet flow rather than concentrate and channelize in the
drainage way. After the stormwater leaves the site, it will eventually reach an existing 30-
inch pipe under Sunrise road that naturally discharges to a property owned by Mr. AI
Dodson.
The developer will pay for and install an energy dissipater consisting of Rip Rap stone on
Mr. Dodsons side of Sunrise road. This is designed to reduce the velocity of stormwater
being discharged via the pipe to a flow rate that a vegetated (grassed) swale/trapezoid
channel can convey across Mr. Dodsons properly. A Rip Rap apron design by Phil Post
and Associates is attached.
The swale/trapezoid channel is Mr. Dodsons responsibility and he intends to conduct this
work to correct existing drainage, problems on his lots. This office has prepared five
channel designs of various widths and depths capable of handling the full flow of the pipe
once the energy dissipater is installed. Calculations for trapezoidal channels are attached.
75
G:\Ivins\carrespondence\memotocraig
