Proclamation Recognizing Albert Lindy Pendergrass <br /> The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation recognizing the life and services of <br /> Albert "Lindy" Pendergrass for the people of Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> BACKGROUND: Lindy Pendergrass was a law enforcement leader and throughout his life <br /> worked tirelessly to keep the Orange County community safe. Lindy Pendergrass served 26 <br /> years in the Chapel Hill Police Department and 32 years as the elected Sheriff of Orange <br /> County. At the time of his retirement in 2014, Sheriff Pendergrass was the oldest and longest <br /> serving Sheriff in the State of North Carolina. <br /> Chair Rich read the Proclamation: <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING <br /> ALBERT LINDY PENDERGRASS <br /> WHEREAS, Albert "Lindy" Pendergrass was a law enforcement leader in Orange County and <br /> throughout his life worked tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Orange County; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was born and grew up in Orange County as the son of a police <br /> officer; and <br /> WHEREAS, Mr. Pendergrass served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass joined the Chapel Hill Police Department in 1956 and served for <br /> 26 years, working his way up the chain of command to the rank of Major; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was elected Sheriff of Orange County in 1982 and served in <br /> that capacity for 32 years until his retirement in 2014; and <br /> WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Sheriff Pendergrass was 81 years old, making him the <br /> oldest and longest serving Sheriff in the State of North Carolina; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was recognized by the Governor of North Carolina with <br /> induction into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2013; and <br />
