7 <br /> 1 Commissioner McKee requested that the Board of County Commissioners recuse <br /> 2 him for item 4-c since one farm belongs to his family, and will sit out the entire process for <br /> 3 that item. <br /> 4 <br /> 5 A motion was made by Commissioner Price, seconded by Commissioner Marcoplos <br /> 6 to accept this recusal. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 John Roberts said this recusal should only be for the McKee Farm Voluntary <br /> 9 Agricultural District (VAD). <br /> 10 <br /> 11 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 12 <br /> 13 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/ Special Presentations <br /> 14 <br /> 15 a. Proclamation Recognizing Albert Lindy Pendergrass <br /> 16 The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation recognizing the life and services of <br /> 17 Albert "Lindy" Pendergrass for the people of Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> 18 <br /> 19 BACKGROUND: Lindy Pendergrass was a law enforcement leader and throughout his life <br /> 20 worked tirelessly to keep the Orange County community safe. Lindy Pendergrass served 26 <br /> 21 years in the Chapel Hill Police Department and 32 years as the elected Sheriff of Orange <br /> 22 County. At the time of his retirement in 2014, Sheriff Pendergrass was the oldest and longest <br /> 23 serving Sheriff in the State of North Carolina. <br /> 24 <br /> 25 Chair Rich read the Proclamation: <br /> 26 <br /> 27 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 28 PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING <br /> 29 ALBERT LINDY PENDERGRASS <br /> 30 <br /> 31 WHEREAS, Albert "Lindy" Pendergrass was a law enforcement leader in Orange County and <br /> 32 throughout his life worked tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Orange County; and <br /> 33 <br /> 34 WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was born and grew up in Orange County as the son of a police <br /> 35 officer; and <br /> 36 <br /> 37 WHEREAS, Mr. Pendergrass served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years; and <br /> 38 <br /> 39 WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass joined the Chapel Hill Police Department in 1956 and served for <br /> 40 26 years, working his way up the chain of command to the rank of Major; and <br /> 41 <br /> 42 WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was elected Sheriff of Orange County in 1982 and served in <br /> 43 that capacity for 32 years until his retirement in 2014; and <br /> 44 <br /> 45 WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Sheriff Pendergrass was 81 years old, making him the <br /> 46 oldest and longest serving Sheriff in the State of North Carolina; and <br /> 47 <br /> 48 WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was recognized by the Governor of North Carolina with <br /> 49 induction into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2013; and <br /> 50 <br />
