23
1
2 Commissioner Marcoplos said there is a lot of money in this line item, and it could be
3 better distributed.
4
5 Amendment 16- (Increase mobile telephone stipend from $35 to $50 per month for
6 County employees who use personal mobile telephones for County business)
7
8 A motion was made by Commissioner McKee, seconded by Commissioner Price to
9 approve this amendment.
10
11 VOTE: UNANIMOUS
12
13 Amendment 18: (Add a 1.0 FTE Deputy Sheriff I position to provide School Resource
14 Officer(SRO) services at Eno River Academy (ERA). The County will receive
15 reimbursement for the 10 month School Year associated expenditures. Offsetting
16 revenue of$56,422 from Eno River Academy for SRO services for the 10-month School
17 Year period.)
18
19 Bonnie Hammersley said the Sheriff was approached by ERA about having an SRO on
20 site. She said the Sheriff has agreed to do this, and the revenue coming from ERA would be
21 $56,422 for the 10-month school period. She said the Sheriff has requested a FTE, and this is
22 the first charter school that has made this type of request. She said the BOCC must provide
23 approval as it is creating a new position within the department.
24 Commissioner Dorosin said he is against this, and does not want County staff working in
25 a private school. He said approval of this amendment would set a precedent. He said he hopes
26 there will be broader conversations about SROs with the school districts in the near future.
27 Commissioner McKee said this position would protect children, which he strongly
28 supports, regardless of where the children go to school.
29 Commissioner Dorosin said the school can still hire a security officer.
30 Commissioner McKee said the County provides SROs to other students.
31 Commissioner Bedford asked if ERA serves certain grades.
32 Commissioner Marcoplos said it is a K-12 school.
33 Commissioner Bedford said she does not support this amendment either, and the
34 Sheriff's office has other funds that could cover the 2 months not covered by the ERA contract.
35 Commissioner Marcoplos said this topic is part of a larger discussion, and it would be
36 breaking new ground. He said the County needs to have more discussions with the charter
37 schools, and should not make any decisions at this time.
38 Commissioner Greene agreed.
39 Commissioner Price said she is does not support this amendment.
40
41 A motion was made by Commissioner McKee to approve this amendment.
42
43 NO SECOND
44 Motion fails.
45
46 Amendment 24 (Add to the County Travel Policy that travel expenses for Commissioners
47 and County staff will include the purchase of carbon offsets for any airfare and the miles
48 traveled by Car Share vehicles.
