Charleston County has
engaged the services of KCI to assist in the design and implementation of targeted recycling programs aimed
to support the County's goal of achieving a 40% recycling rate. KCI identified market segments with the
greatest potential for waste diversion, assessed the resource requirements for each program, and established
a timeline for program implementation. Comprehensive programs designed and implemented to-date have
included,but not limited to:
• "All in One" Single Stream Residential Recycling • Annual Earth Day Event
• Commercial Food Waste Recovery • College &University
• Commercial Business Two Cart Recycling • School District K-12
• Multi-family Residential Recycling • Parks and Recreation Waste Reduction
• Yard Waste Landfill Plastic Bag Ban • Special Events and Large Venues
• Customer Service Script, Tracking and Reporting of Incoming Calls
For each program, KCI led the plan design for the program and educational materials, web site content, and
outreach activities. KCI staff coordinated the involvement of all stakeholders, and helped initiate a
complementary relationship between the Programs division and Collection Operations as well as community
program partners. The contribution of KCI staff to the Programs Division has contributed to a tripling of the
County's recycling rate over the past three years.
KCI's mentoring and training of Programs staff has elevated the performance of each member of the team
and contributed to their ability to move the new programs forward with measurable and verifiable results to
achieve the County's 40%recycling goal.
I recommend KCI to any organization requiring the expertise and assistance of a solid waste consultant.
KCI listens to the unique needs of their clients and provides clear recommendations and innovative solutions
that produce targeted results. It has been a pleasure to work with a consultant who takes on our goals and
challenges and makes them their own.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Carolyn Carusos
Recycling Program Manager
Charleston Countv Environmental Management
recycle.chariestoncounty.org
