5thWall Building Diagnostics Consultants Government Services Annex <br /> District Attorney Office <br /> Roof Replacement <br /> November 2009 <br /> 3 . 02 Preparation <br /> A . Do not add liquids, solvents, or powders to the sealant . Mix multi -component <br /> elastomeric sealants in accordance with manufacturer ' s instructions . <br /> Be Thoroughly remove all materials (sealants , backer rod, etc . ) from existing joint . <br /> Resulting joint shall be thoroughly cleaned , without residue , and properly prepared to <br /> receive new materials . Use mechanical means for cleaning if necessary being careful not <br /> to cause undue damage to surrounding surfaces . <br /> co All surfaces in contact with sealant shall be dry, sound, and well brushed and wiped free <br /> from dust. <br /> D . Verify that all existing sealant and back-up materials have been removed from the joint <br /> cavity. <br /> E . Where back-up material is required, insert the approved backer-rod or bond-breaker tape in <br /> the joint cavity to the required depth . <br /> F . Prior to proceeding with the work, prepare and install one complete joint to be used as a <br /> standard for the remainder of the project . Joint shall be reviewed and accepted by the <br /> Owner prior to proceeding . <br /> 3 . 03 Installation of Back-Up Material <br /> A . Use only the back-up material recommended by the manufacturer of the sealant and <br /> approved by the owner for the particular installation, compressing the back-up material <br /> 25 to 50 percent to secure a positive and secure fit . When using back-up of tube or rod <br /> stock, avoid lengthwise stretching of the material . Do not twist or braid hose or rod back- <br /> up stock . <br /> Be Install backstops dry and free of tears or holes . Tightly pack the back or bottom of joint <br /> cavities with backstop material to provide a joint of the depth specified . <br /> 3 . 04 Primer <br /> A . Immediately prior to application of the sealant, clean out loose particles from joints . <br /> Be Where recommended by sealant manufacturer, apply primer to joints in accordance with <br /> sealant manufacturer ' s instructions . Do not apply primer to exposed finish surfaces . <br /> C . Apply primer in a thin , uniform film . Avoid build -up of film . <br /> D . Allow approximately 15 to 120 minutes drying time prior to applying sealant . Sealant <br /> must be applied same day as primer . <br /> E . Do not prime or puncture backer-rod . Do not apply primer to exposed finish surfaces . <br /> 3 . 05 Bond Breaker <br /> A . Provide bond breakers to the back or bottom of joint cavities , as recommended by the <br /> sealant manufacturer for each type of joint and sealant used , to prevent sealant from <br /> adhering to these surfaces . <br /> 09 -26 Sealants and Caulking <br /> 079200- 3 <br />
