5thWall Building Diagnostics Consultants Government Services Annex <br /> District Attorney Office <br /> Roof Replacement <br /> November 2009 <br /> Co Shingles shall be butted and nailed as they progress up the deck plane . Shingles shall be <br /> secured with a minimum of 5 nails per shingle . Follow the shingle manufacturer's <br /> instructions regarding the location of the nails . <br /> D . Shingles shall be installed in horizontal, pyramid fashion only; vertical "racking" <br /> installation method shall not be allowed . <br /> E . Cap hips and ridges with individual shingles . Individual shingle tabs, 12 inch X 12 inch, <br /> shall be cut and bent lengthwise across the center for use as hip and ridge coverings . <br /> Unexposed portions of each tab shall be cut slightly on each side so it is narrower than the <br /> exposed portion . Covers shall be applied shingle fashion and shall be secured with one <br /> fastener on each side, 5 - 1 /2 inches back from the exposed end and 1 inch up from the edge . <br /> 3 . 06 Valleys <br /> A . Valley shall be open type . <br /> Be Install metal valley in conjunction with installation of shingles . Width of exposed portion <br /> of valley shall increase at the rate of 1 /8 inch per foot along the entire length of the valley <br /> from top to bottom . Top portion of valley shall be a minimum of 4 inches in width . . <br /> Co Ends of individual sections shall be overlapped 6 inches and set in a full bed of sealant. <br /> 3 . 07 Ridge Vent <br /> A. Verify that a gap , approximately 2 inches in width exists along the length of the ridge and <br /> extending to within 24 inches of each end of the ridge . Cut deck if necessary to provide <br /> gap . <br /> Be On roofs with ridge board, cut two slots , one on each side . Slots shall be 1 -3 /4 inch in <br /> width . On roofs without ridge board, cut slot 2 inches in width . <br /> Co Install ridge vent continuous along entire length of ridge . Ridge vent shall extend the full <br /> length of the ridge including uncut areas . Cover ridge vent with cap shingles and secure as <br /> noted in paragraph 3 . 05 . E . <br /> 3 . 08 Flashing <br /> A. For sloping roofs which abut vertical surfaces , provide stepped metal flashing as per <br /> recommendations of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) . <br /> Be Provide edge metal and trim at all gables , rakes, and eaves . Secure metal to substrate <br /> with fasteners at 12 inches o . c . Set flanges of metal in a full bed of flashing cement prior <br /> to securing with fasteners . <br /> C . Place eave and rake metal tight with fascia board . Lap joints 2 inches and seal with <br /> flashing cement . <br /> 09 -26 Asphalt Fiberglass Shingles <br /> 073113 - 5 <br />
