ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />WORKSESSION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: February 13, 2001 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~-~ <br />SUBJECT: Bond Education -Trust for Public Land <br />DEPARTMENT: ERCD PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Memo and materials David Stancil, 245-2590 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-81$1 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 6$$-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider an offer from the Trust for Public Land for assistance in conjunction <br />with the proposed November, 2001 bond referendum. <br />BACKGROUND: On February 2, Commissioner Jacobs and ERC Director David Stancil met <br />with representatives of the Trust For Public Land (TPL), a national organization with an <br />expressed mission of working with landowners, government agencies, and community groups to <br />create parks, set aside open space in the path of growth, and conserve land for watershed <br />protection, scenic beauty, recreation, historic landmarks and landscapes. <br />TPL offers assistance in identifying ways to finance parks and open space; and has been very <br />active in variety of parks and open space initiatives nationwide. In this region, the Trust assisted <br />Wake County in its successful November 2000 open space bond. <br />The TPL representatives expressed interest in working with the County, at whatever level is <br />desired. Additional information and materials from TPL are attached. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is na charge for the assistance of TPL in parks and open space <br />bond program education arid development. Tools used by TPL for public information (surveys, <br />brochures, etc) may require funds -which are traditionally privately-raised. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board consider the attached <br />information and discuss the potential involvement of this organization in the preparation for the <br />proposed November bond. <br />
