8 <br /> <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Nate Davis was born and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and was one of the <br />first African-American students to integrate Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools in <br />1962; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, after graduating, Nate Davis began working at the Hargraves Community Center <br />and eventually earned the position of Supervisor; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Nate Davis served on the Orange County Human Relations Commission as <br />member and chair, and during his tenure participated in the drafting of the <br />Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Nate Davis served on the Steering Committee of the Orange County Misdemeanor <br />Diversion Program for 16 and 17 year old youth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, on December 31, 2018, Nate Davis retired from employment with the Chapel Hill <br />Department of Parks and Recreation, having devoted 45 years to the children, <br />teenagers and adults at the Hargraves Community Center; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Town of Chapel Hill bestowed Nate Davis with the 2011 W. Calvin Horton <br />Service Award during the 9th Annual Salute to Community Heroes gala presented <br />by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize <br />Nathaniel Davis, Sr. for his unwavering service to the people of Orange County, <br />and express heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for his numerous and invaluable <br />contributions to the improvement and well-being of the Orange County <br />community; and the Board wishes Nate Davis a most enjoyable new journey in <br />his life with Peggy, his wife, and his family. <br /> <br />This the 21st day of May 2019. <br /> <br />Mr. Davis thanked all of his family members, the residents of the Town of Chapel Hill <br />and the Board of County Commissioners for this recognition. <br /> <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Price, seconded by Commissioner Dorosin <br />for the Board to approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> <br />c. Proclamation Recognizing the Chapel Hill High School Women’s Fencing Team for <br />Winning the 2019 State Championship <br />The Board considered voting to approve a Proclamation Recognizing the Chapel Hill <br />High School Women’s Fencing Team for winning the 2019 State Championship. <br />Todd McGee, Community Relations Director presented this item. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: The Chapel Hill High School Women’s Foil Team recently won the North <br />Carolina Fencing League state title under the direction of Coach Doug Guild, who has guided <br />the program to numerous state titles. <br />The team members introduced themselves: Erin Timmons, Kate Barrett, Jasmine Gee, <br />and Alesandra Gutierrez-Arnold.
