8 <br /> <br /> 1 <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS 2 <br />PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING 3 <br />NATHANIEL DAVIS, SR. 4 <br /> 5 <br />WHEREAS, Nathaniel “Nate” Davis, Sr., has been a civil rights pioneer, record setting athlete 6 <br />and respected leader throughout the Orange County community; and 7 <br /> 8 <br />WHEREAS, Nate Davis was born and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and was one of the 9 <br />first African-American students to integrate Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools in 10 <br />1962; and 11 <br /> 12 <br />WHEREAS, after graduating, Nate Davis began working at the Hargraves Community Center 13 <br />and eventually earned the position of Supervisor; and 14 <br /> 15 <br />WHEREAS, Nate Davis served on the Orange County Human Relations Commission as 16 <br />member and chair, and during his tenure participated in the drafting of the 17 <br />Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance; and 18 <br /> 19 <br />WHEREAS, Nate Davis served on the Steering Committee of the Orange County Misdemeanor 20 <br />Diversion Program for 16 and 17 year old youth; and 21 <br /> 22 <br />WHEREAS , on December 31, 2018, Nate Davis retired from employment with the Chapel Hill 23 <br />Department of Parks and Recreation, having devoted 45 years to the children, 24 <br />teenagers and adults at the Hargraves Community Center; and 25 <br /> 26 <br />WHEREAS, the Town of Chapel Hill bestowed Nate Davis with the 2011 W. Calvin Horton 27 <br />Service Award during the 9th Annual Salute to Community Heroes gala presented 28 <br />by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce; 29 <br /> 30 <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize 31 <br />Nathaniel Davis, Sr. for his unwavering service to the people of Orange County, 32 <br />and express heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for his numerous and invaluable 33 <br />contributions to the improvement and well-being of the Orange County 34 <br />community; and the Board wishes Nate Davis a most enjoyable new journey in 35 <br />his life with Peggy, his wife, and his family. 36 <br /> 37 <br />This the 21st day of May 2019. 38 <br /> 39 <br />Mr. Davis thanked all of his family members, the residents of the Town of Chapel Hill 40 <br />and the Board of County Commissioners for this recognition. 41 <br /> 42 <br />A motion was made by Commissioner Price, seconded by Commissioner Dorosin 43 <br />for the Board to approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. 44 <br /> 45 <br />VOTE: UNANIMOUS 46 <br /> 47 <br />c. Proclamation Recognizing the Chapel Hill High School Women’s Fencing Team 48 <br />for Winning the 2019 State Championship 49
