2 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING <br /> ALBERT LINDY PENDERGRASS <br /> WHEREAS, Albert "Lindy" Pendergrass was a law enforcement leader in Orange County and <br /> throughout his life worked tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Orange County; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was born and grew up in Orange County as the son of a police <br /> officer; and <br /> WHEREAS, Mr. Pendergrass served in the United States Marine Corps for 4 years; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass joined the Chapel Hill Police Department in 1956 and served for 26 <br /> years, working his way up the chain of command to the rank of Major; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was elected Sheriff of Orange County in 1982 and served in that <br /> capacity for 32 years until his retirement in 2014; and <br /> WHEREAS, at the time of his retirement, Sheriff Pendergrass was 81 years old, making him the <br /> oldest and longest serving Sheriff in the State of North Carolina; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass was recognized by the Governor of North Carolina with induction <br /> into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2013; and <br /> WHEREAS, Lindy Pendergrass served the people of Orange County in a law enforcement capacity <br /> for 58 years; and <br /> WHEREAS, our entire community mourns the passing of Lindy Pendergrass on May 19, 2019 and <br /> expresses our sincere sympathy to his wife, Sue Copeland Pendergrass, and family and <br /> friends; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of <br /> Orange County, express our deep appreciation, gratitude and respect for Lindy <br /> Pendergrass, who over his lifetime provided over a half a century in law enforcement, <br /> protecting the residents and visitors of Orange County. <br /> This the 4th day of June 2019. <br /> Penny Rich, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
