Since July 1, 1990, the Hispanic <br />population has grown 29 percent, while the non-Hispanic White population has <br />increased 3 percent. (These totals do not include persons living in Puerto Rico, whose <br />estimated population on July 1, 1996 was 3.8 million.) <br />• In the U.S., Latino population growth between 1990 and 2000 is expected to be <br />40.3%, a growth rate 4 times faster than that of the U.S. population at 10.4%. <br />• The Hispanic population is expected to contribute 35 percent of the nation's <br />population growth from 1995 to 2000, 44 percent from 2000 to 2020, and 62 percent <br />from 2020 to 2050. By the middle of the next century, the nation's Hispanic population <br />is expected to reach 96.5 million (24.5 percent of the total population). <br />• By 2005, it is projected that Hispanics will surpass non-Hispanic African Americans as <br />the nations second-largest race/ethnic group, behind only non-Hispanic Whites. <br />• The Hispanic/Latino population is the fastest growing population in North Carolina. <br />• People of Mexican origin constitute the, largest portion of the total Hispanic/Latino <br />population in North Carolina. 1997 U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicated that Wake <br />County had the second largest growth of Hispanic, in the nation, 133% growth. <br />• While the Hispanic/Latino population in North Carolina receives various services from <br />private and public agencies, many basic needs are still unmet. The most basic is need is <br />addressing the language barrier. <br />• North Carolina ranks 5th in the U.S. in its number of migrant and seasonal <br />farmworkers. <br />• The economic impact of farmworker labor in North Carolina represents 28% of the <br />state's economy. It is further estimated the each migrant farmworker annually <br />contributes more than $12,000 to total state agricultural profits. <br />• In 1996, the nation's total foreign-bom population was 24.6 million, of which over 40 <br />percent were Hispanic. <br />Page in Spanish <br />Hispanic/Latin Affairs of North Carolina
