The committee plans to have the signs mounted by the Buildings & Grounds division of Public
Works. The project will be integrated over time into the division's normal work schedule. The
project will also require administrative time. Costs related to county staff time have not been
included in these costs.
The costs below include an estimated $100 for translation services.
PHASEI
Option A. Retrofit key county building interior signs with universal symbols (where applicable;
i.e., handicapped symbol) and with Spanish translations. The signs will also meet ADA
standards. The signs will include restroom, safety, directional, department names, and internal
department signs.
Key buildings identified by the committee include Government Services Center, Government
Services Annex, Northern Human Services, Planning and Agriculture, Richard E. Whitted
Human Services, Central Recreation, Skills Development Center, and Southern Human
Services. Due to heavy usage, signs are also included for the Dental Clinic at Carr Mill Mall.
Option A also includes providing the general 'safety sign,' saying "No smoking - No soliciting -
No weapons - No animals," for the.outside of public entrances to all - not just key - county-
owned buildings, as recommended by the Risk Management Team. This sign also will be
placed at the entrances to departments in leased buildings.
Estimated production cost: $28,329*
Option B. Retrofit all county building interior signs.
Estimated production cost: $36,158.*
'"The 21" x 18" `safety sign' includes hours information as well as warnings: "No smoking- No
soliciting - No weapons - No animals." These signs cost $299.20 each. A more abbreviated
sign leaving off the hours information and the "No animals" warning, sized at 12" x 16," costs
$97.30 each. Substituting this smaller sign would save $12,114 from either totals.
Note: Department name and internal department signs for the court and law enforcement buildings
were not included in these estimates. Counties are generally held to be responsible for providing the
`shell' of the building while the courts - with state funding - are generally responsible for their own
operations, including matters such as office furniture and other internal needs.
