MINUTES-Draft <br />ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF HEALTH <br /> March 27, 2019 <br />S:\Managers Working Files\BOH\Agenda & Abstracts\2019 Agenda & Abstracts/ March Page 4 <br /> Physical Activity & Nutrition <br />• The OCHD nutrition department offers Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and a <br />Diabetes Self-Management Education Program (DSME) to help prevent and manage <br />certain medical conditions. The MNT program had 782 encounters. The DSME <br />program had 364 enrollments of which 44 were new. <br />• HCOC partners with and serves on the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). <br />The partnership’s goals include incorporating exercise and healthy eating into <br />daily/weekly activities and encouraging school age youth to get the recommended <br />amount of physical activity to prevent childhood obesity. <br /> Mental Health & Substance Abuse <br />• From 2013-2017, there were 66 suicide-related deaths. <br />• The 2nd Annual ‘’Be the Light’’ Suicide Prevention Awareness Walk was held. There <br />were 100 community residents present and local support included the BOH, BOCC, <br />OCHD Health Director, Hillsborough police department and Mayor Tom Stevens. <br />• Alcohol <br />o The Campus and Community Coalition (CCC) which includes the Town of <br />Chapel Hill, OCHD and Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools partnered and pulled <br />together research on alcohol’s impacts on the underage brain to bring resources <br />to families in our community so they can start a conversation about adolescent <br />substance use. <br />• Tobacco <br />o New bilingual Tobacco Free Signs replaced the outdated and weathered signs <br /> which also support the local public school’s 100% Tobacco Free Policy providing <br /> a reminder that e-cigarettes are prohibited on school grounds. <br /> <br />Ms. Rawlinson stated that this report is desseminated to the NC DPH, BOH, BOCC, HCOC <br />membership and OC government employees. Electronic versions are available online via the <br />HCOC and OCHD websites. She noted that per Benchmark 38, Activity 38.2, for accreditation <br />purposes, the BOH minutes should reflect that the BOH members have received and reviewed <br />the SOTCH report. <br /> <br />Lastly, Ms. Rawlinson spoke briefly about the upcoming 2019 CHA. The CHA is a report about <br />the health of the community and the community’s capacity to improve the lives of residents of <br />Orange County. Community involvement helps to ensure that the true needs of the community <br />are identified, accurately represented, and addressed. Collection methods for data collection <br />include focus groups, online surveys and surveys conducted door-to-door. She continued to <br />explain the CHA process which involves 8 phases and takes place over a 12-14 month period. <br />She encouraged the Board member participation in any or all of the CHA process. <br /> <br />The BOH members had questions that were addressed by Ms. Rawlinson. <br /> <br />D. FSA Strategic Plan Update <br /> <br />Coby Jansen Austin, Director of Programs and Policy, and Dominika Gazdzinska, Community <br />Outreach Specialist, gave an update on the FSA’s 2019-2022 Strategic Plan. Below are some <br />highlights. <br /> <br /> FSA is a collective of various people and organizations that work together to ensure <br />children in OC, whose families struggle to make ends meet, have the opportunity for a <br />healthy, safe and productive life. It was modeled after Harlem’s Children Zone.
