ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: May 26, 200,5
Action Agenda
Item No. _~
SUBJECT: Southern Orange Senior Center Plans Review
DEPARTMENT: Purchasing and Central PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
Services
ATTACHMENT(S):
None
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Pam .Jones, (919) 245-2652
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732.8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To review plans for the Southern Orange Senior Center and provide comments as
may be appropriate.
BACKGROUND: The Southern Orange Senior Center planning committee, appointed by
Commissioners, has worked steadily over the past several months with Gurlitz Architects toward
a design for the new senior center. With the design work complete, the next phase of reviews
in the Town's regulatory process will begin on May 24, 2005 and will hopefully conclude with
Town Council action on June 27, 2005. Given the limited window of construction time needed
to complete the new center by the June 30, 2006 lease expiration of the existing senior center
at the Galleria, the architect has proposed that construction documents be solicited for bids
around June 1 and any changes that result from the reviews would be handled via bid addenda.
Richard Gurlitz will present the project and the proposed design at the work session.
Commissioners Gordon and Halkiotis have served as the Commissioner representatives on the
planning committee, This plan review is intended to provide an update for the entire Board and
to solicit comments as may be appropriate in advance of the imminent solicitation far bids.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The latest construction cost estimates are consistent with the $4.9
million discussed with the Board in December 2004.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the information
as presented by Gurlitz Architects and provide comments and endorsement of the plans.
