2 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING <br /> NATHANIEL DAVIS, SR. <br /> WHEREAS, Nathaniel "Nate" Davis, Sr., has been a civil rights pioneer, record setting athlete and <br /> respected leader throughout the Orange County community; and <br /> WHEREAS, Nate Davis was born and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and was one of the first <br /> African-American students to integrate Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools in 1962; and <br /> WHEREAS, after graduating, Nate Davis began working at the Hargraves Community Center and <br /> eventually earned the position of Supervisor; and <br /> WHEREAS, Nate Davis served on the Orange County Human Relations Commission as member and <br /> chair, and during his tenure participated in the drafting of the Orange County Civil Rights <br /> Ordinance; and <br /> WHEREAS, Nate Davis served on the Steering Committee of the Orange County Misdemeanor Diversion <br /> Program for 16 and 17 year old youth; and <br /> WHEREAS, on December 31, 2018, Nate Davis retired from employment with the Chapel Hill <br /> Department of Parks and Recreation, having devoted 45 years to the children, teenagers and <br /> adults at the Hargraves Community Center; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Town of Chapel Hill bestowed Nate Davis with the 2011 W. Calvin Horton Service <br /> Award during the 91h Annual Salute to Community Heroes gala presented by the Chapel <br /> Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize Nathaniel <br /> Davis, Sr. for his unwavering service to the people of Orange County, and express heartfelt <br /> appreciation and gratitude for his numerous and invaluable contributions to the <br /> improvement and well-being of the Orange County community; and the Board wishes Nate <br /> Davis a most enjoyable new journey in his life with Peggy, his wife, and his family. <br /> This the 2 1"day of May 2019. <br /> Penny Rich, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
