ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: January 18, 2001
Action Agenda
Item No.. = h
SUBJECT: Elder Mistreatment Coalition Education Funds
DEPARTMENT: Aging PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Proposal Jerry Passmore, ext. 2009
Grant Budget Florence Soltys, Aging Brd Chair
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 9684501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To approve accepting a mini-grant for $5,000 on behalf of the Orange County Elder
Mistreatment Coalition aimed at reducing the number of elders whose abuse and /or neglect are
hidden.
BACKGROUND: The Elder Mistreatment Coalition is an organization composed of 20
professionals and volunteers whose purpose is to reduce the number of mistreated elders
through community awareness. This group includes staff from the departments of Aging and
Social Services, and various boards such as Aging, Nursing Home and Adult Care Advisory
Committees. The Coalition applied for and was awarded a grant for $5,000 from the National
Association of State Units on Aging to develop and reproduce training materials which will be
used by Coalition members. The in-kind local match is the donated time of the Coalition
volunteers. Since the Coalition is not an incorporated non-profit entity with a Section 501(c3)
status, the Department on Aging has been asked to receive the mini-grant on behalf of the
Coalition. The funds will be used to offset travel and supply costs associated with the
educational campaign. This proposal has been reviewed and recommended approval by the
Aging Advisory Board and is one of the educational objectives (page 24) identified in the Master
Aging Plan (M.A.P.).
FINANCIAL IMPACT: No County Funds are involved in this project.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board accept the $5,000 mini-
grant from the National Association of State Units on Aging on behalf of the Orange County
Elder Mistreatment Coalition.
