Proclamation Recognizing the 110t—" Anniversary of the NAACP (formerly Item 84) <br /> The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation recognizing the 110th <br /> Anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in <br /> 2019. <br /> Commissioner Dorosin read the proclamation: <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING <br /> THE 110T" ANNIVERSARY OF THE NAACP <br /> WHEREAS, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was <br /> founded in 1909; and <br /> WHEREAS, the bi-racial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans was formed by a <br /> group including W. E. B. DuBois, Mary White Ovington, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and <br /> Henry Moskowitz; and <br /> WHEREAS, the charter of the NAACP states its mission as follows: "To promote equality of <br /> rights and to eradicate caste or race prejudice among the citizens of the United <br /> States; to advance the interest of colored citizens; to secure for them impartial <br /> suffrage; and to increase their opportunities for securing justice in the courts, <br /> education for the children, employment according to their ability and complete <br /> equality before the law."; and <br /> WHEREAS, during the early decades of the NAACP, an anti-lynching campaign was central to <br /> its agenda; and <br /> WHEREAS, the NAACP played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and <br /> 1960s; and <br /> WHEREAS, one of the organization's key victories was the U. S. Supreme Court's 1954 <br /> decision in Brown v. Board of Education that outlawed segregation in public <br /> schools; and <br />
