The Human Relations Commission has planned activities <br />during the month. The Human Relations Commission has developed the theme, "Building <br />Bridges: From Tolerance to Acceptance" to promote the ideal that we must all strive to create <br />an atmosphere where people are valued and accepted rather than merely tolerated. Centered <br />around the "Building Bridges" theme, during the month of February the Human Relations <br />Commission will be conducting an Essay Contest with Orange County and Chapel Hill/Carrboro <br />elementary through high schools. The Department will also host a Youth Summit on February <br />24t"; and both students in grades 9-12 and adults are encouraged to attend. On February 23rd, <br />a Youth Summit kick-off Concert will be held at Hanes Auditorium on UNC Campus. The <br />Concert featuring Ursula Rucker, a spoken word artist, is open to all Orange County and Chapel <br />Hill/Carrboro high School students free of charge and to all others for five dollars. The <br />Commission will also honor a citizen, a youth leader and an Orange County business with the <br />annual Pauli Murray Award at a reception on February 25"' at A. L. Stanbeck Middle School at <br />3:00 p.m. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no direct financial impact associated with this Proclamation. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the Proclamation <br />and authorize the Chair to sign it.
