Attachment 1 17
Radio PSA Copy
Did you know? In North Carolina, it is legal for a motorist to cross a double yellow line
to pass a bicyclist or group of bicyclists, provided the motorist has a clear view of the
road ahead and can make the pass safely. When doing so, the motorist must give four
feet of space or change lanes completely to pass.
Thanks for doing your part to keep our roads safe for all users. This message is brought
to you by Orange County's Drive Safely Ride Safely Campaign.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know? In North Carolina, bicycles are considered vehicles, and bicyclists are
subject to the same laws as motorists, including riding with the traffic flow, obeying stop
signs and red lights, and signaling when turning. When riding at night, bicyclists must
have a front light, plus a rear reflector and rear light. Being a visible and predictable
cyclist helps everyone.
Thanks for doing your part to make our roads safer for all. This message is brought to
you by Orange County's Drive Safely Ride Safely Campaign.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know? North Carolina law states that bicyclists are required to ride as far to the
right as practicable, but sometimes they need to take the full lane in order to avoid
hazards on the road or to increase their visibility to other traffic. Bicyclists are allowed to
use the full lane whenever they deem it necessary for their safety.
Thanks for doing your part to make our roads safe for all users. This message is
brought to you by Orange County's Drive Safely Ride Safely Campaign.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you know? The law does not require cyclists to ride single file, and groups of
bicyclists sometimes ride 2 abreast [or side by side?]. This makes them more visible to
other traffic, and can facilitate passing by shortening the passing distance. A motorist
must give either four feet of space or move completely into the other lane when passing.
A bit of patience can go a long way toward making our roads safer for everyone.
Thanks for doing your part. This message is brought to you by Orange County's Drive
Safely Ride Safely Campaign.
