These efforts will result in projects that improve water quality <br />degraded by existing development.. <br />Other Stormwater Management Measures <br />Local governments in the Upper New Hope Arm Subwatershed of Jordan Lake have been <br />working to protect water quality in the absence of state rules, often adopting rules before being <br />required to by state regulations, and often adopting local rules that go beyond state requirements. <br />Many of the local governments are already implementing some of the measures that would be <br />required under the Jordan Lake Nutrient Management Strategy, azrd maziy of the local <br />govermnent requirements go beyond those that would be required under the .Iordan Lake <br />strategy. <br />Chapel Hill <br />Stormwater Management for New Development -The Town of Chapel Hill's <br />Comprehensive Plan hnplementation includes: <br />• Low hnpact Development design and improved stonnwater management regulations <br />• Improved sedimentation azid erosion control regulations. <br />• Open space and greenways acquisition. <br />• Limits impervious surfaces with ratios, depending on the zoning. <br />• Rigorous environmental standards for the University of North Carolina at Chapel <br />Hill, including stornlwater management. <br />• Protection of significant stands of species from development impacts. <br />;~arian Buffer Protection -The Town of Chapel Hill's Resource Conservation District <br />Ordinance requires: <br />• 150 ft riparian buffers (per bank side) for perennial streams, and <br />• 50 ft riparian buffers (per bank side) for intern~ittent streams, <br />Open Space -The Town of Chapel Hill has a Greenways azid Open Space Master Plan that <br />includes open space acquisition activities. The total bond funds expended since 1996 is $3.2 <br />Million, <br />stonnwater Education -The Town of Chapel Hill has dedicated a staff position exclusively <br />for water quality education. The person provides stonnwater education at elementary <br />schools, supports a public participation program, staffs booths at public events, supports the <br />Clean Water Education Partnership, and targets audiences for best management practice <br />messages (e,g,, homeowners, restaurazrts, automotive, Boy and Girl Scouts, etc.). <br />Stream monitoring -The Town of Chapel Hill conducts monthly aznbient water quality <br />monitoring of major streams in 13 locations using EPA lab methods and conducts digital data <br />base maintenance. <br />
