1 <br /> i ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: February 19, 2002 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. <br /> SUBJECT: Discretionary Rural General Public Transportation Funds <br /> DEPARTMENT: Aging/OPT PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) 0 <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Application Jerry Passmore, ext 2009 <br /> Route Maps Al Terry, OPT Supervisor <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Mebane 336-227-2031 <br /> PURPOSE: To approve a Discretionary Rural General Pubic (RGP) Transportation Fund <br /> application for$29,220.00 requiring a 10% local match to enhance general public routes <br /> operated by the Orange Public Transportation (OPT) Program for the remainder of FY 2002. <br /> BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Department of Transportation, Public Transportation <br /> Division, has additional discretionary funds for agencies that desire to expand their general <br /> public service for the period of April 1, 2002 through June 30, 2002. There will also be <br /> discretionary RGP funds for FY 2002-2003. These funds will be allocated on a competitive <br /> basis and awarded to agencies based on need. <br /> Currently, Orange County has used all of its RGP funds for the operation of the existing Orange <br /> Express which runs between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill/Carrboro four times a day, Monday <br /> through Friday. The discretionary fund request would (1) add additional routes to the Orange <br /> Express for hourly service throughout the day, (2) add mid-day routes that complement Triangle <br /> Transit Authority's Hillsborough to Durham commuter bus service, and (3) establish a <br /> Hillsborough inter-city bus route that would connect with service to Durham and Chapel Hill. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: The OPT Program already has the local 10% match funds of$2,922.00 <br /> in its current budget. Thus,no additional county funds will be required. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the application <br /> for Discretionary Rural General Public (RGP) Funds for FY 2002 and authorize the Chair to sign <br /> the Certified Statement of Participation. <br />
