ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: May 23, 2005 <br />Agenda <br />Item No. D.2 <br />SUBJECT: Orange County Comprehensive Plan -Land Use Element Update <br />DEPARTMENT: Planning and Inspections PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />1) Outline of Staffs Presentation <br />2) Excerpt from OC Zoning Ordinance <br />3) Land Use Element Outline <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Craig Benedict, Planning Director, ext 2592 <br />Tom Altieri, Comprehensive Planning <br />Supervisor, ext, 2579 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />PURPOSE: This Update is aNon-Public Hearing item and serves as a continuation of the <br />county's efforts to inform its citizens of the Comprehensive Plan Land Use Element Update <br />process that is currently underway. <br />BACKGROUND: The County's Planning Department completed over 4-years of data collection <br />and analysis, since the release of year 2000 US Census data, During the spring of 2004 and <br />early this year, Planning Staff conducted a series of public outreach meetings throughout the <br />county to present the data that had been compiled, illustrate development trends, identify <br />growth management challenges, unfold staffs ideas, and receive input and perspective from <br />citizens and advisory boards on how to address growth management challenges, <br />Planning Staff will provide an overview of what has been processed to date with stakeholder <br />involvement what comprehensive questions need to be answered and what steps lie ahead. <br />This overview is for the Board as well as the public for general information shating and <br />comment. Attachment 1 provides an outline for the presentation that Planning Staff will conduct <br />at this meeting. <br />General Guide: The Land Use Element serves as a general land use goals and <br />objectives guide setting forth policy options for future implementation through zoning, <br />subdivision or other regulatory methods to provide an orderly and coordinated pattern of <br />land use and development. <br />Research and Outreach: Demographic and socio-economic research and Public <br />Outreach has been conducted for 5-years to update the Land Use Element of the <br />County's Comprehensive Plan.
