ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING <br /> THE 110TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NAACP <br /> WHEREAS , the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in <br /> 1909 ; and <br /> WHEREAS , the bi -racial endeavor to advance justice for African Americans was formed by a group <br /> including W . E . B . DuBois , Mary White Ovington , Ida B . Wells - Barnett and Henry <br /> Moskowitz ; and <br /> WHEREAS , the charter of the NAACP states its mission as follows : " To promote equality of rights and to <br /> eradicate caste or race prejudice among the citizens of the United States ; to advance the <br /> interest of colored citizens ; to secure for them impartial suffrage ; and to increase their <br /> opportunities for securing justice in the courts , education for the children , employment <br /> according to their ability and complete equality before the law . " ; and <br /> WHEREAS , during the early decades of the NAACP , an anti - lynching campaign was central to its agenda; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS , the NAACP played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s ; and <br /> WHEREAS , one of the organizations key victories was the U . S . Supreme Court ' s 1954 decision in <br /> Brown v . Board of Education that outlawed segregation in public schools ; and <br /> WHEREAS , the mission of the NAACP has evolved today "to secure the political , educational , social , and <br /> economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race - based discrimination and ensure the <br /> health and well -being of all persons" ; and <br /> WHEREAS , the NAACP has grown to more than half a million members worldwide ; and <br /> WHEREAS , historically marginalized and oppressed people remain encouraged and continue the march <br /> for the full measure of social justice and equality that they believe they shall achieve one <br /> day , <br /> NOW, THEREFORE , the Orange County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes the 110th <br /> anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People , and urges <br /> all residents to support and engage in the ongoing struggle to ensure justice and equality for <br /> all of humanity . . . locally , nationally and globally . <br /> This the 2nd day of April 2019 . <br /> Penny Rich, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
