1
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: April 2, 2019
Action Agenda
Item No. 4-c
SUBJECT: Community Development Week Proclamation
DEPARTMENT: Housing and Community Development
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Proclamation Sherrill Hampton, Director, Housing and
Community Development, 919-245-
2492
PURPOSE: To approve a proclamation designating April 22-26, 2019 as Community
Development Week in Orange County, North Carolina.
BACKGROUND: The week of April 22-26, 2019 is designated as National Community
Development Week. Its purpose is to showcase the Community Development Block Grant
(CDBG) and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Programs, which are both
administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Since 1975,
the CDBG Program has been an important source of funding for communities to address a
broad array of affordable housing and community and economic development needs. The
HOME Program, since 1992, has provided funding to local communities to create or retain
affordable housing for low-income households.
The theme for this year's National Community Development Week is "CDBG and HOME Make
Communities Better Places to Live and Work."
In recognition of National Community Development Week, Orange County's Department of
Housing and Community Development will co-sponsor a National Community Development
Week exhibit at the Orange County Main Library, Carrboro Branch Library and the Chapel Hill
Public Library to showcase books that touch on the many facets of community development.
Books will range from the landmark The Power Broker, by Robert A. Caro to P.E. Moskowitz's
recent How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood. In
addition, the Housing and Community Development Department will host other activities during
the week, including posting stories on the County's Website showcasing the applicable work of
the County's various community partners, etc.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with the consideration of the
proclamation.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable
to this item:
