1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: April 2, 2019 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 8-f <br /> SUBJECT: Proclamation Recognizing the 110th Anniversary of the NAACP <br /> DEPARTMENT: BOCC <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Proclamation Donna Baker, Clerk to the Orange <br /> County Board of Commissioners, <br /> 919-245-2130 <br /> PURPOSE: To approve a proclamation recognizing the 110th Anniversary of the National <br /> Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 2019. <br /> BACKGROUND: The NAACP was founded in 1909 as a bi-racial endeavor to advance justice <br /> for African Americans and has grown to over 500,000 members. <br /> The mission of the organization has evolved to secure the political, educational, social, and <br /> economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health <br /> and well-being of all persons. <br /> The NAACP played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with consideration of the <br /> proclamation. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to <br /> this item: <br /> • FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND INEQUITY - <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or <br /> ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic <br /> status. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the Proclamation <br /> Recognizing the 110th Anniversary of the NAACP and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />
