Update on Skip the Straw Month <br /> 11 The Board received an update on efforts related to "Skip the Straw Month." <br /> 12 <br /> 13 BACKGROUND: In October 2018, based on a petition by Commissioner Penny Rich, the <br /> 14 BOCC proclaimed March 2019 as "Skip the Straw Month" to recognize and reduce the <br /> 15 environmental damage that single use plastic straws cause. Staff will provide an update <br /> 16 and progress report on staff and community engagement in follow-up to that proclamation. <br /> 17 <br /> 18 Blair Pollock, Solid Waste Planner, made the following PowerPoint presentation: <br /> 19 <br /> 20 SKIP THE STRAW <br /> 21 A CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE USE OF PLASTIC STRAWS IN ORANGE COUNTY <br /> 22 <br /> 23 Background <br /> 24 • In October 2018, Orange County and the three Towns all proclaimed March 2019 to be <br /> 25 "Skip the Straw" Month (and October 2018 was declared `Reduce single use plastics <br /> 26 month, more generally). <br /> 27 • Solid Waste Staff, with others throughout the County, have organized activities and <br /> 28 events for "Skip the Straw" month <br /> 29 <br /> 30 What's Planned <br /> 31 Two screenings of"Straws"- a film about the environmental impacts of single use plastic <br /> 32 straws on the oceans - by NC Filmmaker Linda Booker who will speak at both events. <br /> 33 Other speakers are Bonnie Monteleone, Founding Director of the Plastic Ocean Project <br /> 34 in Wilmington and Bryant Holsenbeck, Durham-based garbage artist and author of"The <br /> 35 Last Straw". <br /> 36 March 25 Varsity Theater & <br /> 37 March 26 Orange County Library <br /> 38 <br /> 39 Recruiting local businesses to pledge to "Skip the Straw" <br /> 40 Soliciting residents to pledge to "Skip the Straw.
