30 <br /> held as a part of the Pauli Murray Awards to engage Orange County youth <br /> in the quest for social justice and equal opportunities. Three middle <br /> schoolers and three high schoolers were recognized for their essays. <br /> 3. The HRC sponsored a Town Hall Community Conversation on October 1, <br /> 2018 titled "Hate, Heritage, and Hope: Orange County Voices." The goal <br /> was to listen to the community and offer up a list of recommendations to <br /> the BOCC as a response to the ongoing Silent Sam turmoil. The event <br /> was very interactive and was an excellent opportunity for residents to <br /> voice their opinions on a prominent community issue. <br /> 4. Increase the awareness of the HRC in the community. <br /> • Secured a partnership with WCHL/Chapelboro.com. We provide a twice <br /> monthly blog in our own named column and have received approval to do <br /> public service announcements. <br /> • Created a Facebook page. <br /> • Initiate plan for "One Orange" to celebrate our community's "common <br /> spaces and diverse faces." <br /> 5. HRC has joined the Orange County Community Remembrance Coalition. <br /> This group represents eight different community organizations that seek to <br /> bring awareness to the history of lynching in this county. In addition, the <br /> Coalition seeks a partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative to learn more <br /> and follow their guidelines on the collection of soil and the establishment <br /> of a marker and monument. <br /> 6. HRC chairperson, D. Stroman, and OC HRC staff attorney, A. Moore, <br /> attended the national "Facing Race" conference in Detroit, MI on <br /> November 8-9, 2018. This conference is the largest and most <br /> comprehensive gathering of administrators, governmental, and for/non- <br /> profit diversity, equity, and inclusion leaders in the country. The <br /> information and connections were rich and extensive. <br /> 7. HRC functionality and efficiency: <br /> • Recommendation to BOCC for the reduction of the size of the <br /> Commission <br /> • Focus on three primary areas: Education, Housing, and Criminal Justice <br /> • Establish a Marketing/Communications chairperson. <br /> • Examine the timing of the Pauli Murray Award, the HRC Forum, and the <br /> Community Read. <br /> List of Specific Tasks, Events, or Functions Performed or Sponsored Annually. <br /> 1. Provide proclamations recognizing Human Rights Week, Human Rights Day, <br /> and the Bill of Rights Day in December of each year, Human Relations Month <br /> in February, Fair Housing Month in April, and Women's History Month in <br /> March. <br />
