<br />The Orange County Hoard of Commissioners met in regular session on :7onday, September
<br />2, 1958, at 10 o'clock a.m. in the Commissioners' room at the courthouse in Hillsboro, N. C.
<br />Members present: Chairman R. J. M. Hobbs, Commis±oner Donald McDade, Donald
<br />Stanford, Dwight Ray and Henry Walker.
<br />Members absent: None
<br />The minutes of the meetings held during the month of August were read by the Clerk
<br />and approved.
<br />The following deoaztrents offlcials presented reports for the month oL August, 19$8:
<br />Frank Maddry, Delinquent. Tax Collector
<br />Walter ktrenn, Peteran Serrice Officer
<br />Dan Matheson> Farm Agent and Cyrus Green and Ed Barnos, Asst. Farm Agents
<br />Odell Clayton> Sheriff and
<br />Jane Parker, Yle]Sare Supt.
<br />Y7, J. Andreas of Hillsboro ranted the highway department to correct the drainage from
<br />the Mt, Willing Road, as i4 xas damaging his property, The Board agreed to inspect Mr,
<br />Andreas' property and then take the matter up wlth Clarence iJalters, Highxay Supervisor
<br />for this district.

<br />Stacy Nevi]1e xas read by Chairman Hobbs.
<br />Upon motion oL Cormdssioner ';calker, seconded by Commissioner Htanford, and unanimously
<br />adopted, a ensh value of $$D.00 pex~ month was placed on the accomondations and utilities
<br />Tarnished to Deputy Sherifl and Jailer', Rainey Roberts, Tha County Accountant xas directed to
<br />certify this t.o the Local Governmental Employees Retirement System.
<br />Upon motion oL Co~mnissiener Ray, seconded by Commissioner McDade, and unanimously
<br />passed, -urham Foundary xas allotted the contract for the welding ,job to be done in the ,jail.
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner day, seconded by Commissioner Walker, and unanimously
<br />passed, the olumbing contract for the ,jail xas awarded to George Haithcock of Chaoal Hill.
<br />:[r, Haithwck's salary for his haloer was not to exceed $2.50 per hour.
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner Stanford> seconded by Conmissioner McDade, and unanimously
<br />passed, it was ordered that the cracker vending machine located on the main floor of the
<br />courthouse be moved to the basement floor and that the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company be
<br />alloxed to install a vending macnine on the basement floor of the pax courthouse.
<br />Walter Wrenn, Civil Defense Director for Orange County, presented a letter requesting
<br />$$,000.00 to purchase the necessary equiFvnent for communication and nri~ting oL maps for
<br />use by the Civ11 Defense Unit. No action was taken on this matter,
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner Stanford, seconded by Conmissioner McDade, the following
<br />motion was introducted:
<br />In vier of the rids support given by the citizens oT Orange County to petitions directed
<br />to the Chairman of the Hoard of County Commissioners requesting an election on the question
<br />of establishing the Alcoholic Berverage Control System in Orange County> and in vier of
<br />the facts incorpoated into these petitions, that this Hoard dlrect the Orange County Board
<br />of Election to call on February ], 1959> an election upon this ouestien as authorized by
<br />Chapter 18 section 61 of the General Statutus of North Carolina.
<br />Chairman Hobbs called for a vote on this motion and there were 4 ayes and 1
<br />abstained.
<br />Upon motion of Commissioner St anford> seconded by Commissioner McDade> and unanimously
<br />adopted Sherman Shelton xas hired to replace Doses Burt as Negro Farm Agent effective
<br />October 1, 19$8, Mr. Shelton was hired at the salary Mr, Burt is pox receiving and the
<br />Board agreed to take under advisement the possibly oL a salary increase at a later date,
<br />The folloxing resolution was unanimously adooted:

<br />Orange County as Farm Agent in a good and faithful manner, and?
<br />W}ER AS, on October 1, 1958, Mr, Burt rill retire from the position ea Faxm ~
<br />Agent becaue of ill healthy

<br />accomplished in elevating the farming practices among the Colored Citizens of Orange
<br />Countyy and further to wish for him a speedy and complate recovery of his health.
