Nurse crops are expected to develop in two to five weeks and,
with adequate maintenance, be an effective method of soil stabili ation for
a period of six months to one year. Nurse crops are not effective as primary
long term cover, however if properly maintained they can be an adequate
cover and protecti on for the devel opment of pri mary crops.
The goal for a primary crop i s for it to develop over a three wee to one year
period and be effective up to three years with a well-defined maintenance
program. The long term goal for a primary crop is the initial step toward
a sustainable protective cover without the need of maintenance. here the
pri mary crop is i ntended for a managed lawn and landscape aesthetics, the
effective period can be extended by a more intense maintenance program.
here native species are uti I i ed and become establ i shed during the planned
mad ntenance program, a permanent cover that wi I I support future successi on
species should exist and require little or no additional maintenance or
management.
n uses of both nurse and pri mary crops, the devel opment peri ods I i sted on the
tables are optimal based on normal climatic conditions for the pl anti ng dates
I i sted. The sedi ment and erosi on control mad ntenance program must recogni e
that optimum temperatures and rainfall are the exception rather than the rule.
The design professional needs to provide flexibility in the stabilization plan
to address the potential ranges of temperature and moisture conditions we
experience in North Carolina.
6.11.1 Rev. /0
