OPT Short Range Transit Plan

Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates, Inc. | 4-3

Flex/Deviated Fixed-Route
Flex or Deviated Fixed-Route service operates as a hybrid
between fixed-route and demand response service. This
service type typically operates with smaller, cutaway bus
vehicles and operates along a fixed route, but makes
deviations within a certain distance from the fixed-route
alignment to pick up additional passengers. Deviations
are typically prearranged with reservations similar to
demand response service. Allowing route deviations
fulfills ADA requirements for the service type.
Flex service may be an appropriate service type for areas
in Orange County with moderate population and
employment density that may not support full fixed-route
service.
Zone Service
Zone service is a reservation-based Dial-a-Ride service
that operates within specific geographic areas during
specific times or certain days of the week. This service
type can provide door-to-door transportation service within their designated zone or make pick-
ups and drop-offs at designated areas to provide connections to established fixed-route services.
Figure 4-5 Zone Service Example from Mason County, WA
Figure 4-4 Example of a Flex Service Alignment
