OPT Short Range Transit Plan
Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates, Inc. | 3-5

Transit Users vs. Non-Transit Users
Survey responses were analyzed independently for transit users and non-transit users to
determine priorities and preferences for each group. In order to avoid a small sample size, this
assessment does not separate GoTriangle and OPT users; instead, this should be viewed as a
trend for the overall region. Transit users’ selected improvements were generally more focused on
improving service frequency and expanding service later in the evening, while non-transit users’
priorities were focused on convenience and relocating routes closer to their homes and jobs, as
shown in Figure 3-5. Both groups of users have strong preferences for expanding service on
weekdays and Saturdays.
In a direct comparison between the differences of transit users and non-transit users’ selected
improvements, 52% of transit users selected more frequent Monday-Saturday service compared
to only 36% of non-transit users. Similarly, 36% of transit users selected later evening service
compared to 15% for non-transit users. Transit users also preferred improving night/Sunday
service frequency—28% compared to 13% of non-users.
The most commonly selected improvements for non-transit users were routes closer to their
home (41%), more frequency service Monday-Saturday (36%), and routes closer to their job
(33%). Non-transit users also prioritized improved transfer connections (28%) at a higher rate
than transit users (18%).
Figure 3-5 What improvements would cause you to use transit more often? – Transit Users vs. Non-
Transit Users
7%
9%
10%
10%
11%
17%
18%
24%
26%
27%
28%
28%
36%
52%
15%
10%
8%
18%
33%
21%
28%
26%
23%
41%
23%
13%
15%
36%
0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60%
Route closer to my job/school
Earlier morning service
Other (please specify)
Better service information
Route closer to my job
More comfortable bus stops
Improved transfer connections
More direct service
More park-and-ride availability
Route closer to my home
Reduced travel times
More frequent service at night and/or
Sundays
Later evening service
More frequent service during the day
Monday-Saturday
Non-Transit Users
Transit Users N = 384
N = 39
