6 <br /> 1 Senator Foushee thanked Commissioner Burroughs for her service and friendship, and <br /> 2 her sacrifice of time away from her family. <br /> 3 Senator Foushee said she came to the Board with some reservations about being well <br /> 4 received, but Commissioner Jacobs took her in and got to know her, rather than listening to <br /> 5 what others may have said about her. She said she served as vice chair with Commissioner <br /> 6 Jacobs as Chair, and were able to discuss the County and its future. She said Commissioner <br /> 7 Jacobs helped the board move forward from 5 members to 7 members, despite not being in <br /> 8 favor of it initially. She said she may not have always agreed with Commissioner Jacobs, but <br /> 9 she will boldly proclaim that there is no other resident of Orange County who loves this county <br /> 10 any more than he, and has sacrificed more of him/herself to ensure that Orange County was <br /> 11 always first. <br /> 12 Representative Meyer said on behalf of the State of North Carolina, and Governor <br /> 13 Cooper, they are proud to present Commissioner Jacobs with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine: <br /> 14 <br /> 15 Among the honors and awards the Governor of North Carolina can bestow, none is more <br /> 16 valued than The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Since its creation in 1963, it has been presented <br /> 17 to honor persons who have a proven record of service to the State of North Carolina or some <br /> 18 other special achievement, and to others as a gesture of friendship and good will. Upon being <br /> 19 named to The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the honoree receives a certificate by which the <br /> 20 Governor confers upon the recipient "...the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary privileged to <br /> 21 enjoy fully all rights granted to members of this exalted order among which is the special <br /> 22 privilege to propose the following North Carolina Toast in select company anywhere in the free <br /> 23 world: <br /> 24 <br /> 25 `Here's to the land of the long leaf pine, <br /> 26 The summer land where the sun doth shine, <br /> 27 Where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great, <br /> 28 Here's to "down home", the Old North State! <br /> 29 <br /> 30 Oaths of Office for Board Members <br /> 31 <br /> 32 • Senator Valerie Foushee administered the oath to Commissioner Earl McKee <br /> 33 • Senator Valerie Foushee administered the oath to Commissioner- Elect Jamezetta <br /> 34 Bedford <br /> 35 • Judge Samantha Cabe administered the oath to Commissioner- Elect Sally Greene <br /> 36 <br /> 37 Commissioner McKee expressed deep appreciation to the folks of Orange County for <br /> 38 allowing him the honor of serving a third term and he said he takes the role of senior member <br /> 39 seriously, and will endeavor to do help move the Board along in an expeditious manner. <br /> 40 Commissioner Greene said her heart is filled with gratitude to serve everyone in Orange <br /> 41 County, and she announced her office hours: Saturday, January 26I" at the Cup-A-Joe in <br /> 42 Hillsborough from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. She said she looks forward to hearing from <br /> 43 residents, and will have been through a bit of training by that time. <br /> 44 Commissioner Greene thanked the other elected officials and former officials here <br /> 45 tonight, and said she looks forward to serving on the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). <br /> 46 Commissioner Bedford said she is a CPA and a numbers cruncher, and she will be <br /> 47 brief. She thanked the voters for allowing her to serve, and her family for its support, and those <br /> 48 who served with her previously and helped with her campaign. She pledged to serve all the <br /> 49 residents of Orange County, regardless of location or any other factor, and she will always put <br /> 50 health and safety as her first priority. <br />
