Minutes - Regular Meeting
Solid Waste Advisory Board
May 3, 2007
Approved June 7, 2007
sense to build a gas collection system . All the three plans at Carolina North show a
power generation station . The recommendation is that the County eonfinuecontinues
discussion with UNC on using gas at Carolina North . It is about break even .
Sassaman adds the social and environmental benefits need to be added in.
Bowerman states that you could bring the gas line down the tracks to the cluster of
schools as it runs right near there .
Pollock notes that it is hard to site even a greenway on top of a pipeline .
Sassaman adds that there is a much higher quality steel required for gas pipelines due
to the excess pressure and when they blow up, it' s significant.
Bowerman asks if the report can be made more public so that the questions about
using the gas don t continue to arise ? People ask about it all the time .
Pollock mentions that it' s public information now but we could do more to publicize
it through our articles in the paper .
Sassaman states that looking at table 3 annual average cost, were they incorporating
future energy costs and on page 2 did they just guess at the BTU value or is there
some real knowledge of what our gas is ?
Pollock replies that I don' t know the answers to that. We can find out. We have been
sampling the methane for the past few years .
Vickers asked if the County looks at fueling its own fleet of trucks from the
compressed natural gas ?
Pollock replies that he doesn' t know but it' s not a bad idea to look at CNG fuel .
Norwood asks how much does it cost to refit a truck and then figure out if there are
any real savings or are you doing it more for the environment and is it worth it?
Pollock says perhaps if the County trucks, school buses, and UPS do it, perhaps there
is enough replacement for diesel fuel . There is every reason for us to respond to this .
5 . Options for Extending Life of Landfill Sassaman asks do we have the estimates for
the remaining life as stated in the memo at this meeting .
Pollock states that if Gayle were here, he would have those . We can have them for
you next month .
6
