Activities and Progress during 2000 - 2001
The County' s report on Sustainability Indicators was completed this year . It includes a
wide array of measures , such as economic , open space, social and environmental . EIE
Committee members met with the project consultant, Pam McIntosh, to discuss the
progress of her work, which was built upon that of the SOCK Its task force identified
potential indicators for sustainability . Ms . McIntosh tracked the availability of existing
data from a variety of sources including County, City, State and Federal Departments as
well as private sources that could be used to validate these indicators . The report is an
excellent tool that should be distributed to all County departments and advisory groups
and used to help the County measure progress toward its goals . The EIE Committee
provided examples by matching environmental and open space indicators to goals stated
in the SOCF Task Force report
Status
Specific indicators related to the environment have been identified as appropriate for
further evaluation by this Committee, assuming support from County staff
Plans for 2002
The Committee plans to further study the indicators related to environmental quality (as
well as those highlighted in other reports in the State and Nation) and assign priorities .
Also , the Commission expects to use environmental indicators to guide the formatting of
future SOE reports .
GOAL 5 : COMMIT FUNDS TO PUBLIC OUTREACH , FOR EDUCATING THE
PUBLIC ON THE NEED TO PLAN FOR THE COUNTY'S ENVIRONMENTAL
FUTURE AND FOR BUILDING SUPPORT FOR THE VARIOUS TOOLS AND
METHODS PROPOSED , FUNDS SHOULD BE BUDGETED TO DISSEMINATE THE
SUSTAINABILITY INDICATORS REPORT AND TO MAINTAIN , EXPAND , AND
PROMOTE THE COUNTY' S ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION WEBSITE AS
DEVELOPED BY THIS COMMITTEE .
Activities and Progress during 2000 -2001
The committee collected and reviewed samples of the environmental information
currently available to Orange County Citizens . It found publications on air and water
quality, soil erosion, stormwater runoff, horticulture, recycling, land preservation and
other relevant documents that directly address many issues of concern to environmental
stewardship . However, many County residents and constituents are undoubtedly unaware
of the existence of these informative materials and few mechanisms exist for their
distribution other than personally visiting these offices or requesting them by phone . The
EIE Committee has been researching the concept of incorporating a variety of single -
issue pamphlets into a pocket folder piece or compiling basic information into a single
flyer that would provide one - stop shopping for anyone interested in Orange County
environmental concerns and programs
21
