Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal <br /> • The CfE Air Quality Committee and ERCD staff will review the existing Air <br /> Quality Inventory and identify any quantitative issues and/or additional concerns <br /> with point, mobile , or area sources . The CfE will focus on this task from January <br /> to May 2002 . <br /> • Recommendations for addressing mobile sources , and other sources that the <br /> County could pursue, will be developed and incorporated into the 2002 State of <br /> the Environment report . <br /> • A proposed target rate of reduction for emissions in the County will be developed <br /> and included in the State of the Environment Progress Report . <br /> • Recommendations will be developed for initiatives to address air quality concerns <br /> in the County, including criteria for long-term alternative fuel vehicle and low- <br /> emissions vehicle purchases as described under Objective 1 . The <br /> recommendations will be included in State of the Environment report . <br /> GOAL 2 : CREATION OF A REGIONAL VIEW OF AIR QUALITY ISSUES <br /> Objective 1 : Work with the State of North Carolina and other local governments to <br /> reduce emissions and adequately monitor air quality in the County, in order to maintain <br /> the health, safety, and general welfare of the County' s citizens . (Related SOE report goal <br /> - Gain a better understanding of transportation issues within the County. ) <br /> Activities and Progress During 2000/2001 <br /> • The County joined the Triangle Clean Cities Coalition in March 2001 . <br /> • The BOCC adopted a resolution requesting staff to explore the potential for <br /> joining the Cities/Counties for Climate Protection Program . <br /> • An initiative was made to work with the Orange County Transportation Planner to <br /> gain a better understanding of transportation issues in the County and region and <br /> to clarify the role that the County can play in addressing air quality-related <br /> transportation issues . <br /> • The CFE met with Tim Saunders and David Bonk to discuss the Durham- Chapel <br /> Hill- Carrboro (DCHC) Metropolitan Planning Organization and the regional <br /> transportation planning process . <br /> • The Air Quality Committee of the CFE increased their activities related to <br /> transportation . They reviewed the Draft 2002 - 2008 - .State Transportation <br /> Improvement Program, the DCHC Metropolitan Transportation Improvement <br /> Program, and other relevant materials . <br /> 15 <br />
