Activities and Progress During 2000/2001 • ERCD and CFE ' s Biological Resources Committee reviewed County policies regarding conservation of natural areas as a preliminary phase of the development of a new Natural Areas Element to the Comprehensive Plan. • ERCD conducted a detailed assessment of the 64 sites identified in the 1988 inventory of natural areas and wildlife habitat . The assessment used 1998 aerial photography and found that many of the sites have been altered or partially developed . Status • Work to develop the proposed guide is pending . Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal • ERCD in cooperation with the CfE will identify such a guide as an action strategy in the forthcoming Natural Areas Element of the Comprehensive Plan. Objective 2 : Amend the County' s Environmental Impact Ordinance (adopted in 1992) to improve the protection of the County' s most significant biological resources , including the County' s inventoried natural areas . Activities and Progress During_2000/2001 • A preliminary review of the ordinance by ERCD and the CfE ' s Biological Resources Committee found it to be outdated and inadequate to protect high- priority natural resources . Status • Pending Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal • A subcommittee of the CfE ' s Environmental Indicators and Education Committee and the Planning Board will meet on an ad hoc basis to develop proposed amendments to the Environmental Impact Ordinance for both advisory boards to consider . Objective 3 : Establish a balance between property owner rights to harvest timber and the needs of the community as a whole to protect itself from damage inflicted by forest clea_r- cutting in wildlife habitats , biological diversity, water quality and quality of life . 11
