Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal <br /> • ERCD will work with the CFE , Durham County staff, the Eno River Association, <br /> and the Triangle Land Conservancy to identify other potential sites to <br /> acquire/protect either adjacent to the regional park or along other segments of the <br /> Little River corridor. <br /> Objective 2 : Development of strong incentives for developers of private lands to respect <br /> and to contribute to the protection of the County' s inventoried natural areas . [ If incentives <br /> are inadequate , the County needs to consider imposing restrictions on development, land <br /> clearing, or ecosystem disturbance on or near these sites . ] <br /> Activities and Progress During 2000/2001 <br /> • Orange County adopted the Lands Legacy program, which has as one of its goals <br /> to protect the County' s inventoried natural areas through acquisition or other <br /> voluntary protection means . <br /> • ERCD reviews all subdivision proposals as a member of the Development <br /> Review Committee, administered by the Planning Department . <br /> • ERCD and the CFE ' s Biological Resources Committee began work on developing <br /> a new Natural Areas Element of the Comprehensive Plan, which upon BOCC <br /> adoption will include new and improved County policies for protection of natural <br /> areas and wildlife habitat . <br /> Status <br /> • Development of the Natural Areas Element is ongoing with a draft document <br /> anticipated by the Spring of 2002 . <br /> Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal <br /> • The draft Natural Areas Element will be presented to the BOCC for consideration <br /> in Summer/Fall 2002 . It will then go to public hearing to receive further input and <br /> refinements before going back to the BOCC for final adoption . <br /> GOAL 3 : MORE EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION POLICIES FOR <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> Objective 1 : The development of a list of current County policies with a side-by- side <br /> listing of available remedies , which would inform both County employees and citizens of <br /> what recourse is available when a significant natural area is in danger and what policies <br /> need better means of enforcement . <br /> 10 <br />
