Activities and Progress During 2000/2001 <br /> • The Orange County ERCD requested and received a $ 5 , 000 matching grant from <br /> the NC Natural Heritage Program for an update to its 1988 inventory of natural <br /> areas and wildlife habitat . <br /> • The inventory update (by consulting biologist Bruce Some) has included an <br /> assessment of previously identified sites and a search for new sites in the northern <br /> half of the County using the Landscape with Wildlife report and guidance from an <br /> advisory committee . <br /> Status <br /> • The update of the County natural areas inventory got underway in May 2001 and <br /> is expected to be completed by Summer 2002 . <br /> Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal <br /> • Results from the inventory will be published and used to identify sites for County <br /> acquisition or protection through other voluntary means . <br /> • Results of the inventory will also be incorporated into the new Natural Areas <br /> Element of the Comprehensive Plan being developed by ERCD and CFE for <br /> BOCC consideration in Fall 2002 . <br /> Objective 2 : A dynamic , periodically reviewed biological inventory. <br /> Activities and Progress During 2000/2001 <br /> • Pending <br /> Status <br /> • Work on this objective awaits the completion of the update of the County' s <br /> inventory of natural areas and wildlife habitat (currently underway) . <br /> Plans for 2002 to Address the Goal <br /> • As the natural areas inventory update nears completion (Summer 2002) , the CFE <br /> Biological Resources Committee intends to work with the ERCD staff and the NC <br /> Natural Heritage Program to develop a procedure for updating the inventory on a <br /> more frequent basis . <br /> Objective 3 : A methodological approach to assess change in forest cover annually, or at <br /> least every five to ten years . <br /> Activities and Progress During 2000/2001 <br /> • ERCD intern, Amy Bleckinger, worked with the ERCD staff on updating GIS <br /> layers to display different forest cover types and to document changes from 1988 <br /> 8 <br />
