 h
organizations and state Division of Parks and Recreation to develop a
framework in which the different community will fit into a regional greenprint .
He noted that a single greenway segment is considerably more valuable when
linked with those in other jurisdictions to form trails such as the New Hope
Creek Trail or the American Tobacco Trail .
Development of the regional greenprint will include three phases beginning
this Fall . Baseline information was shown on a map of approximately 145 , 000
acres already protected in the Triangle . New layers of data will be added to
the map from individual community/ county protection proposals such as the
Land Legacy plans for Orange County .
Phase I is a technical process of bringing together staff from local
governments , agency representatives , and non - profits to review the base
maps and sketch out the important natural and recreational areas . Three
design workshops ( Parks & Greenways , Natural Areas & Wetlands , Farmland
& Forestland ) will be held to identify areas where a number of objectives may
be achieved at once .
Phase II is take the different scenarios of what might be protected and have
a public process , meetings across the region , solicit feedback from residents ,
local leaders and elected officials .
Phase III will result in a regional , open space greenprint which each local
government will be asked to adopt as an official plan. As local open space
plans move forward , the regional system will be achieved and the natural and
recreational functioning systems will be maintained . This effort will help
North Carolina reach its goal of protecting an additional million acres by 2010 .
Hitchings noted that the proposed greenprint could also help Triangle
communities receive state funds for acquiring land for parks and open space .
Discussion followed on time frames , the upcoming workshops , criteria
development, the coordination of efforts among the jurisdictions , and funding
limitations . Hitchings encouraged the CfE members to contact him by email if
they have any further questions or suggestions .
Stancil noted that in the next couple months the CfE would be discussing
priority initiatives for including in the Lands Legacy action plan for 2001 - 02 ,
and that it would be useful to consider initiatives not only at a local level but
in the context of the regional greenprint .
DRAFT CFE 9 / 11 /00 Minutes Page 5 of 8
L :\Car01\CFEMIN\91 100cfeHN AL . doc
