Healy reported that the New Hope Creek Corridor Advisory Committee ( NHCCAC )
was set up with representatives from the Durham Open Trails and Space
Commission , NC Wildlife Resources Commission , Orange County CfE , Friends of New
Hope Creek, Duke University , and area landowners . The NHCCAC has published
progress reports at 5 -year intervals .
The NHCCAC has worked very hard to offer alter development proposals to lessen
their effect on the corridor . They have had mixed success with the outcomes . One
successful effort was the acquisition at Leigh Farm dedicated for a public park
instead of a business/ office development . Another was the recent purchase of the
Johnston Mill Preserve by the Triangle Land Conservancy .
Healy then suggested issues of possible interest to the CfE and Orange County .
1 . Healy asked what we should do for the headwaters of New Hope Creek . With
concerns over water quality , how far upstream should we go and how should this
land be protected ? Should there be any recreational use and public access to this
part of the riparian corridor?
2 . Healy noted current efforts by the NHCCAC in cooperation with Duke University
and others to influence the redesign infrastructure at the Hollow Rock Store ( Erwin
Road ) . He noted plans for a major trailhead on the Durham site . With Duke Forest
trails already going north from Hollow Rock, NHCCAC has been working on a trail
going south from Hollow Rock . Suitable parking and bathroom facilities are needed .
NHCCAC has been working with Duke and area landowners to make this possible .
The question that arises is what about the Orange County side of the creek ? The CfE
was encouraged to think about what kind of contributions the County could make to
acquire land for furthering the project .
3 . Healy proposed linking trails from Durham side with trails in Orange County . He
noted that Chapel Hill 's Dry Creek trail will likely tie into Durham 's Dry Creek trail ,
located behind New Hope Commons shopping center . He reported that we are
nearing completion of having continuous access from I - 40 through some residential
developments via access dedications all the way through to the main stem of the
New Hope . He asked whether an Orange County Dry Creek trail could be
established to link with the other existing trails . A Booker Creek trail was also
envisioned .
Healy noted that a lot has been learned since the project began .
■ The importance of planning as a guide to consistent and timely action
• The importance of thinking in terms of a corridor rather than individual parcels
DRAFT CFE 8/ 14/00 Minutes Page 4 of 6
