16
protection will be established at a local level and coordinated at a regional level to ensure that the
investments made work together to protect the functioning green infrastructure on which our
communities depend . The development of a Triangle GreenPrint will provide communities in
the region with a means of guiding state investments to support local and regional priorities . In
the process , the project will demonstrate how the Million Acre Initiative can be implemented in
other regions in the state .
Project Structure
The GreenPnnt project is divided into three phases :
Phase 1 : Developing Green Space Scenarios
Teams of technical experts will be convened to sketch out several regional scenarios of the land
that should be protected in order to maintain the region ' s green infrastructure . Three design
workshops will be held in the fall of 2000 to carry out this work . Different green space types
will be clustered together as follows :
• Parks, greenways, and historic sites (to address functions such as outdoor recreation and
education, cultural heritage , aesthetics , and ecosystem health)
• Natural areas, gamelands, wetlands, and riparian areas (to address functions such as
natural heritage, wildlife resources , ecosystem health, water quality, and flood hazard mitigation)
• Farmland and forestland (to address functions such as rural communities , rural heritage, and
rural economy) .
Maps created during the design workshops will be overlaid to outline different scenarios and
identify areas where multiple objectives can be achieved . The results will be shared with
individuals and organizations throughout the Triangle and the state .
Phase 2 : Drafting the Triangle GreenPrint
This phase of the project will turn the scenarios developed during Phase 1 into a GreenPrmt for
the region . An advisory group of stakeholders will be assembled to help guide the work . Public
meetings will be held across the Triangle to solicit input . Considerable efforts will be made to
actively involve the range of interested stakeholders . The resulting GreenPnnt will include
descriptions of the different types of green space and generalized maps showing their location .
Once priority areas have been identified, discussions will be held with the various implementing
organizations at the local, regional , state , and federal level to determine which projects they can
undertake first , and to identify funding mechanisms and schedules .
Phase 3 : Adopting the Regional GreenPrint
Once the GreenPrmt has been developed, it will be circulated to local governments throughout
the Triangle for consideration and adoption as the official green infrastructure plan for the
region . Presentations and workshops will be made across the region to familiarize citizens and
elected officials with the contents of the proposed GreenPrint . Then each elected board will be
asked to vote to adopt it .
With green space protection, the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts . An adopted
rint will guide the protection of a coordinated network of green space across the
regional GreenP
Triangle that preserves our essential green infrastructure . In the process , it will help maximize
the investments we make in green space protection and in the long-term health and prosperity of
our region .
2
