Identification <br /> ❑ The groundwater program collects data about groundwater contamination <br /> sites , identifies drinking water wells , maintains files and a database , <br /> Mecklenburg Priority List ( MPL ) on these sites <br /> ❑ The program collects ambient groundwater quality data at selected locations <br /> across the county <br /> ❑ The program collects water level readings at selected monitoring wells to <br /> identify and track changes in the water table <br /> Investigation <br /> ❑ The groundwater program conducts investigations around the MPL sites to <br /> insure that residents are not drinking contaminated groundwater <br /> ❑ The Well Information System was designed to allow citizens to easily obtain <br /> information about water supply wells , sampling results and sites that have <br /> groundwater contamination . The system is jointly maintained by Mecklenburg <br /> County Water & Land - Groundwater Program , Environmental Health and the <br /> NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources , Mooresville <br /> Regional Office , Groundwater Section . Corbitt expressed the importance of <br /> collaborative operations among agencies to protect groundwater resources . <br /> Well Protection <br /> Homes that are not connected to the Charlotte Mecklenburg utility system are most <br /> likely obtaining their drinking water from private wells . The protection of water <br /> supply is one of the most important things to do for health and well - being . <br /> ❑ The groundwater program educates citizens on protection methods after <br /> contamination sites are identified . Corbitt described educational tools and <br /> methods used including water festival day for school children as well as one <br /> on one educational experiences with citizens . Learn & Serve America has <br /> awarded a grant to Mecklenburg County Groundwater Guardians to promote <br /> environmental service opportunities for high school students . <br /> Corbitt explained that a goal of the comprehensive groundwater program is to <br /> protect groundwater as a safe drinking water source . The objective is to develop <br /> and maintain a comprehensive groundwater program that includes stable funding <br /> that is fair and equitable . Groundwater Program services were outlined as : <br /> ❑ Assess areas of degraded groundwater <br /> ❑ Identify sites with groundwater contamination <br /> ❑ Identify wells within 1500 feet of the contamination <br /> ❑ Sample wells <br /> ❑ Identify impacts to drinking water <br /> ❑ Community Education / Groundwater Guardians <br /> Corbitt described Health Department services as . <br /> ❑ Evaluate well head construction <br /> ❑ Sample Wells , upon owner request , or for Physicians/ Veterinarians , or for <br /> real estate closings <br /> ❑ Troubleshoot well and septic tank problems <br /> ❑ Analyze groundwater data for public health issues <br /> Page 2 of 8 <br /> DRAFT <br />
