easements over 35 , 000 acres of ranch lands along the eastern edge of Waterton Lakes National Park .
Proceeds from the purchase of the easements will enable ranch families to stay on the land while
encouraging them to keep vital wildlife corridors out of the hands of developers — a win-win for
landowners and conservationists alike .
CONCLUSION
The international work of The Nature Conservancy is not unlike that of a painter who carefully and
consistently applies small dabs of paint to a canvas . Up close, the painting seems an incoherent jumble of
colors , thousands of minute dots lacking apparent form or structure : But stand back and the whole
landsc4pe comes into focus . This art form strikes me as a metaphor for the work of The Nature
Conservancy . On the one hand , the Conservancy is small , like a tiny dab of paint on a canvas . Indeed , our
network of local conservation partners gives the Conservancy the unparalleled ability to work at the local
level — on a " community scale . " This helps us achieve direct , on - the -ground results .
On the other hand , The Nature Conservancy is big — a focused , unified organization capable of taking
conservation action on a broad international level — protecting vast tracts of forest in Brazil , saving vital
migratory bird habitat in Mexico , and conserving southeast Asian waters for the well -being of whales and
dolphins .
Indeed , it is The Nature Conservancy ' s unique capacity to be effective on both a global and local scale that
lies at the very heart of our success . But we dare not rest now . Conservation work is a marathon, not a
sprint . Victory goes to those who persevere .
And as I hope this report has made clear to you , we continue to have our work cut out for us !
Some 90 % of Earth ' s biological diversity is found outside the United States . By conserving the world ' s
life-giving habitats , we ensure the survival of the vast majority of plants and animals . that make up our
planet ' s intricate web of life .
So please , complete your Member Reply Form ( enclosed) and rush it back to me today with the most
generous contribution you can possibly send .
Together, we can make a lasting difference in the cause of conservation . Together, we can conserve key
lands and waters abroad . Together, we can sustain our globe ' s wondrous diversity of life — a natural
heritage whose future belongs neither to the East or West , nor to the developed or the developing , but to
us all .
Thank you , in advance, for your commitment and generosity .
W. William Weeks
Xwoj
- 6 -
