Since 1995 , The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect this vibrant marine world by assisting the Komodo National Park Authority in developing and implementing a 25 -year marine resource and management plan . Last year, our work began to focus on the complex migration patterns of whales and dolphins — known scientifically as cetaceans . Indonesia is uniquely located as the only region worldwide where cetaceans migrate between two oceans , the Pacific and the Indian . Now, we need to learn more about the behavior of both migratory and resident cetaceans . Your financial support will enable The Nature Conservancy to conduct additional studies on these wondrous creatures . New data will allow the Conservancy to better monitor activities within the park that may adversely affect resident whales and dolphins . Using previously gathered data, we have already recommended the extension of park boundaries and the addition of buffer zones in order to protect key migration routes . These recommendations have been widely accepted and are awaiting the Indonesian government ' s final approval . Half a world away, whales are the subject of another important Nature Conservancy initiative . We are working with local partner organizations to study, and protect , the whale populations of Mexico ' s incomparable Sea of Cortez . Its brilliant turquoise waters provide a home to blue , fin, gray , humpback and pilot whales and five species of marine turtles . At Loreto Bay National Park, a 510 , 252 -. acre protected area that lies within the Sea of Cortez, the Conservancy is working with both a nonprofit conservation organization and a local volunteer group on several studies to help safeguard the park ' s whale population . Our studies include a photo identification project to better understand whales ' migration patterns ; a study of krill, the main food source of the park ' s whales ; and research on deceased whales to determine why they died . The more that is known about the whales , the more that can be done to protect them and the park ' s intricate marine ecological system — now under a growing threat from tourism development and overfishing . CROSS BORDER PARTNERSHIPS Straddling the border of Montana and the Canadian province of Alberta lie two of the most spectacular realms of nature in the Rocky Mountains : the United States ' Glacier National Park and Canada ' s Waterton Lakes National Park. Unfortunately , park designers working at the turn of the last century failed to realize that the large animals of this rugged landscape , most notably grizzly bears and elk, would require access to the prairies to the east as a part of their life cycles . Today, almost without exception, these prairies are in private hands — and are being developed at a staggering pace .
