ICA
• Meeting with the COCS prof ect committee (made up of representatives from local
agencies and organizations ) to explain the study , define land use categories , and
• ~ discuss the most efficient ways to collect data, given the local tax and governmental
structure .
• Corning to the region to collect data and interview local officials and department
managers .
• Organizing the data on a computer spreadsheet .
- • Analyzing and checking the data for consistency . -
• Calculating the final land use ratios .
Presentation of Findin_2s
When the research is completed , a brief summary report of the findings (usually 3 - 5
pages per community or county plus data tables ) could be produced and followed up with
a presentation of the findings to the COCS project committee . Another option, chosen by
most communities , is for AFT to write and produce a full report and make a public
presentation of findings . The full report would include graphics , photographs and a color
cover. AFT staff would write and design the report ( approximately 30 -40 pages ) . The full
report would include .
• Background on the study region .
• A summary of current land use and agricultural issues .
• An explanation of the COCS methodology .
• Findings .
• An in - depth discussion of what the results mean and how they can be used , given the
context of local planning and land use issues .
The full reports have been extremely useful in other communiti
es es as an outreach tool to
get the word out about the results of the study .
In addition to the study and report , AFT could assist with public relations and outreach
events to ensure that the general public receives and understands your COCS message .
AFT could work with you from the outset of the project to design a communications plan
which could include some or all of the following :
• Press releases in local newspapers .
• Press conferences .
• Sneakers at local events .
• Coverage in TV and/ or radio programs .
• Brochures .
This option has been very useful in helping communities share study results with a broad
community base , as well as to help support local political initiatives .
NOTE : The project partners recommend combining the information from the COCS
study ( ies ) and Agricultural Economic Impact Analysis ( es ) into one final report , as well as
presenting the information together to the media during the outreach campaign .
3
