➢ Develop draft agenda / program for Summit
➢ Set keynote speaker and exhibitors participants in October/ November
➢ Finalize the Summit program and details by end of January
➢ Publicize the Summit and invite media in February
Fortmann asked members to email other suggestions ; he will work with staff on details .
vim Updates
• Water Summit ( May 16 )
Stancil reported that David Moreau , chair of NC Environmental Management Commission
moderated the May 16th summit . Stancil noted that his notes from the summit discussion
are available upon request . He reported that about 70 people attended the summit , which
included presentations from each of the utility providers in Orange County who shared
information on :
➢ Background on Existing Conditions ( e . g . , supply , capacity , demand , agreements )
➢ Projections for Future Conditions
➢ How providers address the challenges of water provision in the future and what is
the prime interest to achieve the long - term goals .
Don Cox , chair of the original Water Resources Committee , reported on Orange County
Groundwater perspective . Pat Davis ( TJ COG ) provided a regional water resource overview .
Stancil also reported on a joint meeting of the 1992 - 2000 Water Resources Committee and
CfE Water Resource Committee ( April 2001 ) as well as a BOCC work session ( May ) to talk
about the USGS groundwater study report and Water Resources Committee study report .
• State of the Environment Report ( SOE ) 2002
In May the EIE committee presented a set of recommendations for the 2002 SOE report.
Members were asked to review the recommendations and be prepared to discuss at this
meeting .
The EIE Committee identified the following general recommendations :
➢ CfE to advise the ERCD; ERCD will be the major author and publisher of the report
➢ Target a single, condensed SOE report toward the public at large
➢ Show progress through time by using longitudinal data
➢ Organize topics/indicators by to issues rather than by CfE committees
➢ Summarize committee reports (goals, recommendations, progress, request for
funding) in short supplement geared specifically for BOCC (similar to progress report
in off- years)
➢ Follow a format similar to the " Report on Sustainability Indicators for Orange County "
and Wake County 's " Environmental Quality Indicators Report "
The Sustainability Indicators Report was distributed to committee chairs and was asked to
review the indicators that apply water, biological resources and air quality. The EIE
Committee feels the SOE Report would be more valuable if it were used to show trends from
year to year and if it were more produced in a more " user friendly " format.
DRAFT SUMMARY CFE June 10 , 2002
